consider your sleeping position when selecting mattresses

It is surprising how many people go to a store that sells mattresses and lie on one for a few moments and choose it based on that short experience. If you really want to make your back happy, you should get a bit more involved than that. Lie on it in the way you normally would sleep and see how much time passes before you feel the urge to move. If you cannot stay in the position for more than a few minutes, it probably isn’t the mattress for you.

It is also important to consider your sleeping position when selecting mattresses because you need the ideal combination of support and avoiding pressure while providing proper alignment for both comfort and avoiding back problems down the road. Side sleepers, back sleepers, and stomach sleepers all need mattresses that provide gentle support. Generally speaking, a side sleeper does best with a 3” thick comfort layer while a back sleeper is usually happy with at least 2”. A stomach sleeper should be careful not to go too soft or thick to avoid putting too much pressure on the lumbar region.
